At night, the Sun is still below the horizon, but it illuminates the upper layers of the atmosphere (sunlight is scattered on air molecules) and thus the earth’s surface is partially illuminated. At dusk or at sunrise, it is sometimes possible to observe so-called twilight phenomena.
